RE: Largest size tire on a stocker?

Well for $98 + shipping to be able to fit 31's and possibly better ride I'd say it's damn well worth it and when I get the money is probably something I'll be investing in.

Ya, it will not make your ride any worse.  I will say that.  At least I cannot think of a reason that it would make your ride worse.

It should only improve your abilities off road. In all honesty, a stock XJ is surprisingly capable on the trails. You would be shocked to see what some can do. SOOO, adding a couple inches for your tires to move around a bit will only help.

I'd like to see what mine can do as there's some decent mud (short pits but it's really thick and pretty deep as well, it might be a O.K. test for a stocker) but I don't have the best tires. I have Dayton Timberline A/T's except rear passenger is a worn down Goodyear H/T so new tires are in order before any serious mud testing... Which sadly probably isn't going to be until next year... that's when it MIGHT be possible for me to get the funds. For a new rim / tire setup. If you've read my earlier post you know why...
**sigh** Such is life.

edit: I have this version (click me) of the A/T's not the 2nd gen.

I wish I could find a lift for that cheap but somehow I doubt it. It's likely I'll have to pay full price for one. So I guess I might try to trim like hell (which I didn't want to do) and stuff 31's under it after my stock tires wear out (which one of the rears already is).

And also, next summer I'll probably be getting a bike too. You mentioned you're going to grcc which I'm assuming is Grand Rapids community? If so we could wheel, and ride together as I'm only in Muskegon.

I'm now realizing that if I get a motorcycle I'm going to have two insurance payments a month and a loan payment... on top of college expenses etc.. and any other costs I incur while possibly living with my friend if our house sells.

I better get another job. cry

Well, due to the current financial situation the 31's and rims are going to have to wait. The new plan would be to stick 30" Maxxis BH's on the stock rims, and probably get the shackles and whatnot that Adam linked just to be sure they fit in the wheel wells good enough. Better backspaced wheels are going to have to be put on hold for now. Someone mentioned rubbing on Control Arms? (think that's what he said, not 100% sure, just a guess.) Anyways, would these help with that? If so, worth the $140 + shipping?

Also, how do these perform on the snow / ice. Predictions are winter is gonna be pretty killer this year. This is from the farmer's almanac or whatever. Not really sure on it's accuracy.

Wheel spacers.... Just spend a tad more and buy steely rims.  I went to link them from Motion Offroad and they don't have a price listed, you have to call.  You can get them the spacing you want and I don't think that it is to much more then those spacers.  Plus they will look a lot better than you stock rims.biggrin

Here is a link to the rims that I was speaking of:

Dont' waist your money on spacers if your only going with a 10.5" wide rim. You'll be fine. You can adjust the steering stops (for about 10 cents worth of washers) and you won't rub the LCA's at full lock.

The track width (how wide it sits) won't be the best, but with a 2" budget boost and only 31 x 10.5" tire I honestly don't think you'll even notice it. You can fit a 10.5" wide tire on the factory rims without issues. Just don't air down a ton when your offroading and you'll be fine.

We ran 31x10.5" on stock rims on Rebecca's XJ for awhile while we were waiting on her 33's to show up with new rims. Can't say we ever had an issue.

I just think wheel spacers for you will be a waist; especially if your wanting to go larger down the road and plan on running a different rim with a larger tire.

Get the 2" budget boost (spacer and shackle) I liked prior and buy a set of 31's and call it a day.

That's what I wasn't sure of. I didn't really know how stable 31's would be on the factory rims, that's why I was thinking 30's might be better due to the smaller width.

Thanks for clarifying that guys =).

Also, when I do go for rims, I was leaning towards the street locks. Those are steel too right?

The "street locks" are an all steel rim.
