Which year axles will fit?

I found an HP front axle today at a junkyard.  I narrowed it down to two, one was a '91, and the other was a '96.  I'm considering the one in the '96.  I assume it will bolt right in, but want to be sure.  The only difference I could see is the brackets that support the lower end of the swaybar link extend out further forward than the axle I have now.  Will that be a problem?

The Jeep also has a front skidplate and gas tank skid.  I will probobly go back and get the front skid tomorrow.biggrin

Need info ASAP!  Thanks

The axle's are identical. Only thing different may be the gear ratio between the 2, but besides that they are exactly the same.

Vac. disco was only used up untill mid 1990. It was also only used on NP231 equipped Jeeps, if it had a NP242 it was the 1 peice shaft as they never came with the vac. disco. For the older (84-86) I'm not 100% sure on. So an easy way to tell what TC is in a Jeep if it's 87-90 is to look at the axle....

My bad, guess I've been playing with too many YJs.

i would go for the 96 HP because 94 and older have the smaller u-joint on it, so i would go with the stronger 96 HP D30 out of the two

Not always true...

The early ABS equipped D30's have the 297x joints. In 1995 they changed all the D30's over from the 260x to the larger 297x.

So yes, go with the '96 axle unless you have ABS and the older axle is ABS equipped. Being you have a 8.25" in the rear, you can't have ABS though....
