Replacing Dana 30 axle tube seals

Anyone here with experience replacing these seals?  I went to MadXJ and it looks to be a SOMEWHAT simple job, but I know how that can be.  I'm getting a very slight leak on the passenger side.  Sometimes I see fresh oil on the knuckle, sometimes I don't.  So the leak is very small.  I guess the dealer nicked the seal when they rebuilt the diff the last time.  Only answer I can come up with.  And of course they do not warranty the seals, and I would guess they did not replace them anyway.

I looked at the FSM and it appears I need a spreader to get the carrier out....which I don't have.  It looks like if I could do it like MadXJ shows, the pinion dosen't need to be disturbed.  Fairly simple to bolt the carrier back in the way it came out and the clearance between the two gears should remain where it was set???  I DO NOT WANT TO SCREW THE DIFF UP!!!!!!

Anyone that knows what their doing be willing to help a guy out with replacing these seals?confused  Have XJ will travel!smile

Check your breather hose first. It may just be clogged and is pushing fluid out the weakest link (the seals). If you have an aftermarket diff cover it may just be over-filled a bit and once again pushing fluid out untill it settles to the level it needs to be at.

Honestly with all your diff issues you've had I wouldn't touch a thing; especially pulling the carrier out. I'm assuming you want to do the inner seals? Did they replace them when they did all the work?

I will be in your area this next week. Not sure if I'll have much extra time with work but give me a call on my cell and we'll see if I can spare a few hours to help...

Thanks for the reply Adam. First, I know the breather tube is clear. I removed it and cleaned it out when the dealer told me the pinion seal was bad. After finding the oil was running down the firewall I discovered it was coming out the tube. At that time the diff was over filled since I now have the pinion sitting about level I don't need to fill it with as much oil to be sure the pinion is receiving proper lubrication. That was my fault, but you'd think the dealer could have found that out.

The leak didn't appear until I had the driverside jacked up to remove the wheel to paint it. It sat on the jack for about an hour, so maybe that is why the oil has ran into the axle tube. At least that is what I'd like to think. As I said it WAS leaving a spot of oil on the ground, but now it is not and the knuckle is only slightly "wet" with oil sometimes. You're probably right, maybe I should just leave it alone.

I cannot say for sure if they replaced the seals this last time, my guess would be they did not. For now I guess I'll just keep an eye on the knuckle, and check the diff frequently to make sure it has the correct level of oil in it. I might even go back to the factory cover since the hole is at the correct level for the required 1.5 quarts of lube. If I do that I'll have to get a "bolt on" diff guard.

I don't nessacarily think that yanking an aftermarket cover off is really needed. Many of the aftermarket full replacement covers move the fill hole higher so you can fit more fluid in them. Most manufactures say that more fluid will help the life of your gears and/or locker. Is this true? I really have not hard evidence to say it is or isn't, could just be a marketing ploy for all I know.

Nobody says you have to fill it untill it pours out of the drain hole of the new aftermarket cover. If you know it takes 1.5 quarts than put that much in it and call it good.

Just my 2 cents worth...

I agree but with the stock cover I can tell if the fluid level is correct. My RockCrusher cover has no dipstick.

Just figured it would be easier to check and know the level was correct using the stock cover.
