Air Cleaner's

Well id like to get some OPINION's on this.
Instead of spending all of the money on a fancy air filter set up with the tubing and fancy other part's that come with it,  Cant i just cut open my stock air filter box, And place a K & N filter in the end of the tube and get the same thing ???.
I'm talking about a K & N cone style filter.
In the new issue of ORA magazine, They have a section on air filter's and set up's.  The way i read it.  This should work.
But what do i know ?  Not much.  So tell me what you have working for you.
Pic's would be cool.

Sorry no pics , but I just cheese holed my air box( inlet side only) and run a K&N replacement style filter. It works just fine and no longer holds water after water crossing(I bring a couple spare stock paper ones with me). Seems to work just fine.

I understand your delema though. There are so many diferent ways of creating snorkles, & cold air intakes. I simply looked at the lint I had in my pocket and did what I could. Eventually I'll think of something other than my current set up and if funds allow. Make it.

I used a dremel tool and extended the stock hole around the side of the airbox (toward the left fender, not toward the engine) and back along the side a ways) Running paper filter.

I probably should drill a couple small holes in the bottom to let water out if any were to get in there.

edit: I always wanted to get a YJ throttle body air intake tube and cut it down a bit, and stick a sb conical air filter or volant (donaldson) air filter, locating the air filter on the right side of the engine.  Then I cold put a second battery where the airbox was, but I don't need that much juice right now though.

edit 2: I think it's a tj intake . Basically I'd be making this, but on a budget.

I was thinking of doing something like in the pic's you have posted from that article, But i was concerned about engine heat, and water hitting the filter !

Last night i picked up a few things from the local auto parts's store that are for tunner car's.

So i think i have the tubing all set to the air filter box, so everything is all smooth, Smooth bore passage, If that makes sence.

Both Auto store's didn't have my K & N filter in stock.

If and when i get this hooked up, I'll post up some pic's, Thanks for the responce guy's....

I used a set up like that on my YJ and had no heat damage to my filter. As far as mud or dust I wolud just cover it with an Outerwares pre filter cover. You should be able to get it at a power sports dealership.

I just replaced an El Cheapo cone filter that was on my XJ for at least 2 years without being cleaned (thank you PO) with a K&N filter.  I noticed .5-1mpg better in gas milage.  That was with that crappy dirty one on there first...

on Jeepsunlimited, some guy took a piece of exhaust pipe and pushed it into the stock intake tube where the ridges are. He reported a mpg increase and a little seat of pants power.

I could try this... sadly I don't drive the XJ enough to get a mpg figure soon. And the clutch fan is shot and I'll be doing an electric fan swap on it. I could see if I could hack something together for it though.

edit: I think flex-a-lite offers a reverse rotation fan that's the same diameter as the stock clutch fan for our XJs, it's a flex fan though so all I'd need is a spacer.  Hmmm...idea  Not a bad idea for the meantime.

I had a Grand Am with a cold air intake (KN filter was located right behind fog light) and I read in a magazine somewhere to adopt a nylon sock from the gf/wife and put it over the air filter, so I did this, and I had no problems with inhaling water/snow/slush when I had it.  Kinda wierd, but hey if it works...

Well here is what i have done, Total cost was $ 94.00, Its a APC tube, K&N Filter Part # RE 0930.
I had to use part of the stock hose off of the TB. I dont like it. So my local Muffler shop is making me a 95 degree piece to mount to the TB, then to the tube.
I was bored, Been a while since i did anything to the XJ, So this is what i did. LOL
Feel free to critasize. LOL

Ya, I had to think of a way to have one, So i took out the stock one, Looked at it, And hit it with the skill saw. Should work.
Well i think i do, But ill give it some more time before i say i really do.
I hear a high pitch sound too.  But i think it might be where the tube connects to the stock rubber hose, should have that fixed soon.

the high pitch is the vaccuum from the tube and line nice job i like the metal tube compared to the plastic and you have alot less invested in that then i do have you noticed any increase in mpg?, HP?

That throttle body spacer isn't going to do much.  I have one, but the PO put it on before I bought the XJ.
