Well doing some much need / neglected repairs on the XJ. Was working on the heater motor, so I had to loosen the bolt that the radiator coolant jug is attached too. There was some fluid in it, but not much at all so that got me looking more closely at it. I assume I have a closed loop system - no radiator cap to be found, so started following the hose from the jug to see where it attached to the cooling system. To my surprise nothing - the hose just ends ??? Am I missing something here? Now I have not noticed any overheating problem during wheeling - so far, but now this has got me curious. I only see two attachment points on the reservoir - one I assume is the overflow, and the other should go into the cooling system / radiator. Any have a pic of their system - I looked through my manual and not much luck with this. Of course looked at my spare radiator and it is a open loop system. Any input and/or assistance would be great.

okay now I may be getting confused cause I found a pic of a closed loop system and my reservoir looks nothing like what it should. I am now starting to wonder if the previous owner did a open loop swap without proper radiator (don't know how it would be possible). Now my spare radiator has a rad cap so I wonder if that is what their plan was to swap in to complete the open loop system?

If you have a 1992 XJ you should have the open loop system. The closed loop was only used on the Renix era (1984-1990) XJ/MJ's. The photo's above show an open loop system. The overflow bottle will have a hose that just goes down to nothing. It is an overflow hose, so if you build to much pressure and/or have to much fluid it will dump it onto the ground.
My guess is someone at somepoint put in a replacment rad. and put the wrong one in. You should have a rad. cap on the rad. itself with your setup.
yeah been doing some more research - and thats kind of what I am thinking as well. The reservoir has two connections one with a long hose, I assume to go to the radiator, and the overflow, mine is just plastic and no hose. So yeah, the other new radiator that came with the jeep is an open one, so I am now curious to how the heck they filled up the coolant after swapping radiators?

The overflow bottle has an "input" hose on the bottom that should come from the rad. itself by the rad. cap. The other hose comes out of the top and should just go down to the ground.
I'd assume that they pulled the upper rad. hose off and poured in the coolant there, than put the hose back on. This is how to properly fill the closed loop system.
