i went to get gas tonight, shut the jeep off, filled her up, went to start, and all i got was a click from the starter. when i left my house to go get gas, as the starter was turning the engine, i heard a split second kind of free spinning sound i guess you could call it from the starter, but it turned and started like usual otherwise.
now, when i turn the key it just clicks, and if i hold the key, something starts to smoke BAD. idk if it's the starter motor or the solenoid. i checked all the connections and the relay, and everythings good there. is it possible the starter got stuck on the flywheel teeth and got burned out while driving, or did the starter just randomly take a dump? or could it be anything else?

Sounds like a dead spot in the starter.. next time it happens have a buddy hit the starter with a hammer while you hit the key, if that works then its time for a new starter. you can get buy with a dead spot for a while.. but there is always that chance that the starter will stop at that dead spot and leave you stranded. Until you get it replaced i recommend keeping a hammer in your jeep just in case.
The free spinning sounds means that the starter is hanging up on itself and not fully engaging the flywheel/flexplate. Either way its not the solenoid, as the "click" you hear means you are getting power to the starter and same with the spinning noise.

One time my starter fell off... looks like PO replaced starter and did not tighten the bolts enough. Fun times... but I wasn't stranded! (re-insert bolts, tighten with onboard tools, and fire er up!)
