really clean stock XJ chopped
It is all done

we also added a hoop behind the rear window with downbars but by the time we finished it was too dark to bother with pics, Choptopxj will be sending some pics and I will post them up also
found this on JF, i like it a lot. if anything ever happened to the rear end of my jeep, this is probably what i would do. looks good to me

what do you guys think?

I like the look of a chopped XJ and can understand some of its function. However, I still don't understand why. The vehicle is still a unibody. So why not put more effort into creating a stronger chassis. Just my two cents.

Could'nt you create the same function by making a "midgate"( behind the rear seat) and simply remove the liftgate ( maybe even rear windows)? Leaving the rear roof line in tack. Keeping a stronger unibody.

that is a good point. he did add though that he was adding a rear hoop and cage i believe, so that may add some structual integrity to the body

Looks nice, mine was not that clean but it got the job done very well.
P.O. had cut out the rear wheel wells & went well past the pinch seam, so the Jeep wasn't "good" enough to still be road-worthy. Adding th eplate across the back stiffened it back up. I built a cage for it & then sold it due to a finance situation... wish I still had it, now I gotta do it all over again, lol.

I like that idea, but I'd like to do a new-libby like 'freedom top' although I'd leave the roof cross supports intact, and do some unibody frame reinforcement to help maintain structural integrity.

in that gold xj, is that a comanche bed front and nonslider rear window?  I like the looks of the nonslider windows, but like the function of the slider rear windows... and vent windows on early XJs, it'd make for a great AC system.

Structuraly; What does it do to the unibody when you do a chop-it like that? Do you re- support the rear quarters? I also noticed in later pics. A hoop and down bars are mounted to the top of the existing rear quarters. Is that how you recreated the support the D-pillars create?

When I did the inside and tops of the bedsides, I used 1/8 " steel plate and welded it all the way around, which should actually be alot stronger than the original sheetmetal that was there before, then I welded the hoop and down bars to the top of that. It was alot stronger than I had thought it would turn out. I wanted to do the cage into the inside also but the customer did not want to go that far so I did not do it. It should hold up really well for his intended puposes

1/8 WOW defenantly stronger. Nice work. I would have let you put the cage inside too.
Maybe when I want to do more than just cruse malls and cart kids around, I'll have to give you a call.

no problem, I had fun doing this one and would be more than willing to do more of them, It took me a little less than 2 weeks to do this one but most of that was figuring out how to do each step, now that I have it figured out I could knock one out really quick
