So drove the XJ for the first time in a while the other day and the oil pressure gauge is playing with me. It is as if the gauge is only working part of the time. My gauge reads from 0-80lbs of pressure, and is the stock gauge that comes in a '99 gauge cluster. When the jeep is cold it normaly is around 40lbs and when it warms up it goes down to 10-20lbs at idle and fluctuating when you push on the gas. Well for some reason now when the jeep is cold it will be at 10-20 and when it warms up it drops to nothing. Sometimes it does not do this and it will be just fine. Other times it will work fine for a while and then go back to reading nothing.
It does not leak any oil. I checked the oil level and it is fine as well. I have not heard of this problem that I can recall so I don't know if my gauge is messed up or if I should be worried about something.... I will say that this didn't start until it got cold recently. I know in other vehicles that I have had the cold affected the acuracy of the gauges, so is the cold causing this?

I miss the days that they made toys that could kill a kid.
First off make sure your not using a FRAM oil filter; as this is a common problem with them and you should NEVER EVER EVER use a Fram filter.
If that's not the case, check the wiring going to the oil filter area. Make sure it's not loose and also make sure that the wire and the terminal is not corroded at all. Often the wire gets knocked loose since it's right beside the filter when doing an oil change.
FRAM filters are known to have problems, have for years. The biggest issue is that they are made of glue and cardboard and deteriate fast. Untill they change that they'll always have issues. They are made by Honeywell (used to be Alied Signal and Bendix); were my father worked for years.
First I had not herd of FRAM issue too. Something to think about. Second my oil presure at idle when cold is around 50 and only goes down to around 20 at the lowest. With yours fluctuating from time to time I'd guess "bad conection or bad sensor" also. I would be conserned more with a 10-20 reading as normal. I may be wrong but mine only sees 20 when I'm in desprate need of oil change in the middle of July.
You dont have any valve trian noise at higher RPM? Say on the freeway.

man mine is really bed it reads about 1/4 of the way then it drops to about nothing.....But my motor is really REALLY tired.......I think its going to crap out any day now.....from everyone that went to the fall crawl would now what my motor sounds like...lol kinda like a Timex but worse...lol.....
I have used the toughguard Fram filters, and never had noticed an issue , but I believe Adam I did switch to mobil 1 before my Florida trip and I noticed that the oil pressure was up. Thanks for the info Adam.

Payed attention to my oil press at start today and when cold its at 40. Then goes up to about 50 at idle still cold. After a few min it goes down to around 40-35 and stays there. Only after about an hour dose it go down as low as 20. So not saying you have a problem but you may want to try an engine flush next oil change. Depending on how many miles are on it you may have some build up on the pump pick up. Had similar problem on my 150,000+ mile Bronco. Had to pull pan and clean out sludge (also replaced pump). Heres hoping its just a lose wire.
