I have been scouring the Jeep forums looking for some info. I am in the process of putting a 2001 Jeep Cherokee back on the road after it has sat for about a year. The alternator was siezed and I had to have it rebuild. I have put in fresh gas and oil, and was able to get the jeep running, but there seems to be a knocking sound coming from the AC compressor. I loosened the belt and the pully on the compresser is vey loose. Should it be so loose?
do I need to replace the whole compressor? Or can i just replace the pully and bearing? I have never had to replace an AC compressor before, I would imagine that is a job that a professional should do, with it being pressurized refrigerant and all.
If the pully is loose (like I think your mean it is), than the bearing's on it are shot. You can either replace it, or swap it out with an idler pully and ditch the AC pump. It wasn't until just recently that idler pully's were available for our Jeeps; but luckly aftermarket suppliers have stepped up and they are now available.
As far as replacing the AC pump; I'd honestly have a dealer do it; or a good quality Jeep shop. The AC system in our Jeep's in a complex system to tackle for a DIY'er. Once it's opened up it needs the proper tools/system to put to back together correctly so you won't have major issues down the road.

I was hoping that it was possible to just replace the bearing on the compressor as opposed to replacing the whole thing. Any idea if that is possible?
Can you point me in the direction of where to find one of the idler pulley's? I am hoping to get this thing on the road by the end of the week, but $$ is tight.
i have a '98 and i had my bearing assembly replaced on my compressor. MUCH cheaper than replacing the whole thing! so if that's all that is wrong(pulley bearing), by all means, replace just that or as Lead said, ditch the whole system and just put in an idler pulley. maybe even pick up a little power by doing so!

CURRENTLY: 2001 Cherokee Limited 4-dr, 33" Uniroyal Liberator A/Ts, 6-8" well built custom lift (sorry, i haven't measured yet).
SOLD: Project Rig: 87 Cherokee Pioneer 4dr. bone stock now. coming soon: 3" budget lift, go completely doorless and chop the rear cargo area out.
ewwww, yeah if that year range is a sealed unit, then that kinda stinks. let us know what you end up doing. if you decide to do the idler pulley, you should take some detailed notes and pictures of the swap and post it up here in the forum for all to see!

Whatever route I go, If I do it myself, I will be sure to post a write up. Seems that this info is hard to come by. Likely though I will just have my mechanic take care of it. Too many uncertainties with the limited info available on the subject.
