Looking into changing the gearing in my XJ since I'd like to go with 33" tires. Needing some info. Will I need a new carrier going from 3.55's to 4.56 gears on both a Dana 30 and a Chrysler 8.25" Any other parts I'd need other than the obvious one's like an install kit?
Planning on pulling a HP axle out of a XJ at the Pick a Part this spring and totally rebuilding it. If money will allow I'd like to also go with a Power Trax, or a Lockrite in the rear axle. Any real problems with these two setups?
Yes you'll need a new carrier for both the D30 and the 8.25". You'll need an install kit for both (go with one with Timken bearings) along with the carrier's and the gear sets.
If your tearing the D30 all the way apart, spend the extra coin now on a set of new shafts, it'll be eaiser now than later to install them.
I"d also recomend an Aussie over a lockritre or powertrax anyday of the week. Better design, stronger, and no warranty issues with running larger tires. The 29 spline 8.25" is finally now available as well!
Thanks for the info. I'm going to start buying up the parts I'm going to need sometime soon. Guess I'm going to have to educate myself on setting up differentials now. EEK!
Setting up gears is NOT a DIY job (in our opinion). A lot of special tools are required, and a lot of know how to set everything up correctly. Your better off paying someone to do them who's got the experience and professional know how to properly do it.
More power to you if you want to tackle the job yourself, but just be aware that it's not an easy job and if done wrong you'll cause some major damage not only to the gears but any other internals (locker, shafts, brakes, etc).
It takes a lot of shims, a few hours, and trial and error using 'machinists ink' (I forget what its called) but it's usually blue and from the pattern they can tell to add or remove shims. It's quite technical, and interesting to watch.
(I used to work in the service dept of an auto dealership, interesting experience for me)
