I did this a while back, but was too lazy to post. To the story now kids!
First, get a better fan. I got one from the pick-a-part for $15. Make sure the connectors are in good shape, wires aren't kinked or insulation worn off, and that the fan motor spins easily.
Once back home, disconnect the battery, and pull the wiper juice bottle. This is a 1996 XJ, so yours may be different depending on the year.
The bottom of the bottle slides out. Just loosen the bolt below the underhood fuse panel, and slide the bottle toward the engine.
You should see something like this.
I don't have any pics, but I think they're smaller than 10mm (and they're metric) but there's 3 bolts that come out, and carefully remove the old fan. Note orientation just in case some silly small measurement is off. (wires come out of motor at 4-o-clock)
Install new fan motor, using a new or in good condition gasket. Reinstall 3 bolts, tightening to 'just snug' as they're little and will strip easily.
Connect fan to wiring harness, then test fan motor. It should turn on.
Reinstall wiper fluid bottle, tighten bolts just enough so they'll stay snug and not loosen. You don't want to strip the threads.
