Trans problems

I have a 93 XJ with an Asian-Warner trans and its giving me some problems. First off I have always maintained it well and the fluid was just changed last June. I noticed lately that when its cold out the trans shifts fine but when the vehicle warms up it likes to hold in a lower gear like I was putting my foot into it hard. I also noticed that the fluid is BROWN like it has 30k on it not 6K. I am going to drain and refill it tomorrow but I guess what the nagging question is why does it only act up when its warm and not cold. Also why has the fluid gotton so dark so fast?  I rarely tow with this anymore. I did recently change the radiator and I am wondering if the cooler is working. Could the new fluid have been a high detergent and that the friction plates are washing down?
I was going to check the throttle valve cable (or "kick down" cable as some would call it) for proper adjustment but I cannot seem to find any specs on the adjustment on that either. Any ideas?

My civic does the opposite... it'll hold lower gears when cold (in wintertime anyway, fine in the fall) and after it warms up it'll actually shift out to run some normal rpms rather than 4000rpm or so at a steady 35mph.

A honda guy I spoke with said internal seals are leaking and when it warms it closes up the clearance so it operates properly.

With your situation, I think since it holds a lower gear it might be the mechanism (I think it's called a shift solenoid) might not like warm temps. It seems if the friction plates were worn out it'd slip really bad, so I don;t think it's that, or I don't know what I'm talking about. blahblah.gif

I think the new fluid (tranny fluid has a high detergent content) loosened up stuck 'gunk', so just keep draining and replacing and it should clean itself out after a while. And, you're only changing about 30% of the fluid as well as you're not flushing the system (not good for older trannies as it loosens more solidly accumulated gunk and can cause issues).

You might want to replace the tranny filter while you're at it... mine shifted smoother afterward.

I'm not a transmission pro, but I hope this helps.

I would recomend downloading the AW4 manual we have listed on the tech section of the website. It's a VERY good resource and will probally be of great help.

ok first off I think I found the problem. I think when I was working on the radiator issue I remember dropping my rail of sockets on the kick down cable which may have pulled it a tad tighter. I compared it to my buddies 91 in relationship to the exposed bit of cable length and set it there. It seems to be good so far but then again its been cold out these last few days. I am going to change the fluid on Friday but I was told way back when that it doesn't have a replaceble filter it just has a screen to filter out the big stuff. I guess when the engineers designed it they thought that dirty oil was better than no oil.
Second I did down load the manual...holy crap what a boatload of info! A big thanks for that link. :)
