Oil Filter Adapter to the Block ??

Story,
New filter of course after oil change.
1 week go's by. I see oil on filter, I whipe clean, Next day, I see filter wet.
So i replace filerter. Few day's latter, Same thing, Oil on the filter.  Just a litter everytime which is very easy to see do to i use Royal Purple.
So i have baught a new Oil Pan and gasket. New Valve cover gasket.
But my Mechanic say's they are both not leaking, Let's check the Adapter the the Oil Filter attaches to, Which hook's up to the Block.
So we spray it with Brake Cleaner, Then Blow it dry. I start it and let it run for 10 minutes. i dont see anything. I drive it home 8 miles. Look's all dry still.
Im confused.  Has anyone every removed the Adapter to put on a new gasket. Look's like you need a huge torx bit to do it.  I dont see nothing on this in my HAYNES book.

Chris

Check the o-ring for the oil pressure guage that mounts to the oil filter adaptor. They are known to go bad and cause the leak.

I just happend to read a right up on that.
I see there is 3 O rings in there, Looks like i need to buy a big T-60 Bit to pull it off.
Thank's Adam.

I offer no answers for now. Was just wondering why you would even think of HAYNES when we have FSMs posted in the Tech Section......

I had to change mine - from what I was told its a more common problem on higher mileage 4.0s.  The gasket becomes brittle over time and breaks.  All I can tell ya, is have fun - as you probably could tell its not the easiest thing to get too.  There are two different styles - ones with the torq head and the older style is the bolt style (if I remeber correct).  I believe the 3 gaskets from the dealer was like 5 bucks.

Yes, Went to dealer today, $ 5.30 total
Mine is the TORX or T-60
3 O rings.  Ill put it up on the Hoist, Makes it easyer to get to.  But still look's like no fun.

I just changed my gaskests for the oil filter adaptor. it was pretty easy. mine had the bold style and it just unbolts and you change out the o-rings.

For some reason I had the bolt style, but the dealership per vehicle year gave me the other o-ring kit.  From what I head the bolt is much easier then the torq style head.

I think they make remote mount oil filter kits... one for a sbf would work (I use oil filters for 5.0 1980s 'stangs) and no more worries of swearing at the torx fitting. Only problem is where to mount the remote filter... but plumbing in an oil cooler wouldn't be much of an issue (as the 4.0s like to run hot I figure keeping the oil cooler is good, so long as any condensation can boil off during vehicle operation).

I have never seen my XJ run over 220(in heavy traffic) in its entire life and that was when I lived in Phoenix where its over 100 degrees 24 hours a day for 6 months at a time. Most times mine runs right at 195-210 which is just fine. I think the oil probably never runs hot as it takes almost 7 QTS and has a large pan in which to dissipate the heat. If I was to cool anyting it would be my power steering as it gets a might hot when crawling around on the trail. My oil was changed at regular intervals and now my engine has 188k on it and still hloding up. In my opinion an oil cooler would be a waste of money and remote mounting an oil filter on an already easy to get at filter would be more hassle and more prone to leaking ect. I did change my o rings as well. I think I used two of the three. The old ones were so hard you could kill someone with them.LOL. When I reassembled them I used red gel seal as a preventive measure. Its been like 7 years and still no leaks. Now if only I could get my valve cover to stop leaking.....lol.

I agree, I love how easy it is to get to the oil filter. I just stand on the tire and reach down. Wish my other ride's were that easy.

The main thing with the remote filter was getting around the stupid hex/torx bolt...

but yea, with the charcoal canister thing raised up as high as it can go (see my writeup, but it's self explanatory) it makes filter access even easier.  Too bad I don't have the AC line routing of some XJs I've seen since access is way too easy to be legal.smile
