There are two ways to fix this problem. One is to get all the nessary components/hardware from a later XJ and spend about 3-5 hours converting to a vacuum boost non abs system. First off you will need to know how flare some lines as you will be removing the old MC and ABS unit. You will need to flare two lines. One you can reuse. The length of the rod that goes from the pedal is different. You will need to turn it out more(make it longer) to make the pedal height correct. The ABS computer is under the D/S backseat. It looks like an amp. You can pull that out too, Save all your sensors ect. You may be able to resell this stuff.
The other alternative is to call Jeep and ask about the several recalls on this ABS unit. You dont have to be the original owner ect as this is a federal mandate. There were more problems with this system that caused people to crash than it helped them not crash. You may have to pay an hour diagnostic fee but that is nominal compared to what things cost to fix. In my personal opinion you would be better off converting it if you are going to keep it. This system had problems and was junk from day one.

The ABS pump has a LIFETIME free replacment warranty on your model. Take it to your local dealer and they have to do all the work, and replace the part free of charge.

If they give you a hard time, report back as I have all the warranty #'s I can give you as I had to fight with my local dealer about it...

Please find above the recall # (702). By law they have to fix it. If they give you a hard time ask to speak with the regional service manager and once again give them the recall number. I had to fight with them for weeks, and by the time they offered to fix it the XJ was totaled.

If you convert over to standard vacuum assist brakes you will still need the proportioning valve as well as the MC and booster. Then just run brake lines right?

This seems like a very simple thing to do.  I just got a 90 XJ and it has the ABS problem, I plan on letting the wife drive it and don't like what I have read about this system.  The booster and MC from local AZ is only about $130.  I was thinking of getting the proportioning valve and a set of lines from the local JY for ease of duplicating the lines.  I have not researched a good source for the valve yet.

Can you just remove all the ABS equipment or does some of it have to be retained other systems?

Honestly the easiest solution to "ditching" the ABS is to just disconnect the ABS pump on the pass side firewall area. Their is a harness that goes to it. Just unhook it and the ABS pump will stop working.

We did this on a older XJ we had and never had an issue with the brakes.

If you just unplug the pump you will have no power assist. The pump pressueises the brake flud which in turn charges that accumulator(the thing that looks like an old time movie "bomb") which is what gives you your power assist. It also helps with the abs too but that is getting way too involved to explane here. I guess you must have legs like stumps to drive without the assist because that pump is the only thing that provides power brakes. It was all I could do to get home when mine went out.
When I converted mine I just got the stuff from another donor vehicle.(93 XJ) I used everything and the swap went pretty good. Had to make 3 lines and mount the prop valve. I had to remove some wires, adjust the pedal rod, ect but it only took like 5 hours or so. The YJ valve will most likely be the same as they had the same brake combo and sizes for both most years.
The prop valve actually doesn't proportion anything its actually a brake line safety valve. This is so if you blow a rear line you still have front brakes. The actual proportioning is done in your master cyl itself. Although sometimes I think that really doesn't matter too much either. My old CJ had large Chevy front calipers and Dodge front rotors for my rear brakes that I made myself. I had the stock 1986 style MC which was for drum brakes and it worked great. I never had any isses with stopping power. If anything I had too much as sometimes it would lock up the rear tires in a panic stop situation. if you need detailed instruction drop me a line. You will need a flare tool which you can rent and a tubing cutter to make a few new lines. Other than that its not really too hard.
