Broken Rear Upper Shock Mount	Permalink

I recently discovered that the upper rear shock mounting bolt inserts (drivers side) pulled out of the body due to rusting out. Has anyone had this problem, and how was it fixed? Id like to avoid dropping the gas tank or welding anywhere near it. Ive had someone tell me that there are nutserts on the market, but Im not sure I wanna go that route either because I think it could happen again. One idea I had was to go through the cargo area floor to install a set-up similar to the front shock conversion brackets so I can use an actual crossbolt instead of the bar-pin. This is on an 01 XJ. So it is the rear shocks you are talking about.

I have just replaced the rears on mine. Actually I only have one finished. I busted the bolts on the shocks. You can acutally look up and see the nuts that hold the bolts on if you look. I drilled out the bolt and was trying to get the bolts to colapse. Well I took a screw driver and pounded on the nut from the side on the top. Then pounded with a punch on the bolt and the nut popped out. I was left with just the hole now. Went and bought new nuts and bolts and just replaced everything. And I will say that it was much easier then drilling the bolts out.

That might not help you much because I don't know what all was rusted on yours. But just so you know, you can get to the nuts without drilling a hole through the floor of you XJ.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Since the nuts pulled out of the sheet metal mounting point, I dont really have much faith in them holding in the future if I replace them. I plan on crawling under there to have a closer look later today, so hopefully I can make a decision soon on what to do to correct the problem or modify the set-up. Its too blasted cold out right now, so I need to get the vehicle into my warehouse to check it out. (and where is that snow I put on order-if its gonna be cold, it needs to be snowing...)

This seams to be a very common problem on the XJ's especially here in the midwest. We sell a lot of the JKS rear shock conversion mount systems to guys who have had your exact issue.

I love the JKS mount. Easy to install too. I think I did a write up on the install and posted it on here someplace.
