On-Board Air vs. CO2 Tanks

Well i was looking around for things that could be useful on the trail to add to my jeep "wish list" which is turning into the gotta get now list lol

but anyways....

I came upon a link to VIAIR on board air systems. Its basically a compresser that runs off the battery, that fills an air tank, that can be used to run air tools, fill tires, blow AIR, duh lol. But im planning on eventually getting 37s so i was looking into this kit from VIAIR

http://www.viaircorp.com/20001.html

i found it for 475 online. i know its expensive, so it wont happen for a while. Im just kinda looking for the pros and cons of each and personal experiences

thanks
-Brendan

I use an air compressor that was for an air suspension system on a Lincoln. Its slower than snot in January but I have it hooked to a tank that I fill before I leave the house. That way you can use the tank and the compressor fills as you go. Its primative but it works and wasn't expensive. I used an air brake tank from a dump truck. I think both cost me less than $50.

In my opinion that is salty.  You could get the same going a much cheaper route.

I like this idea.

I have a pos 12v plug in compressor that is 'plug in and come back after lunch' to air up one tire.  Stock tires.disbelief

I fill the air tank before I leave the house with my big compressor. It holds approx 60 cu ft of air which is enough to completely fill one 35 inch tire and then some. The Lincoln compressor is not as slow as some of those you can buy at Sears or Harbor Frieght. It fills pretty good.
How I have it set up is say that you aired down too much. You add some air. Air tank goes low so compressor comes on but at this point who cares you are wheeling. So while you are having fun the compressor is charging the tank back up. I DO NOT try to use air tools or make my air system a mobile mechanics station. I just use it for airing tires or in a pinch blowing one back up. I have yet to have anyone tell me my system isn't good enough for their needs-which is usually only to add more air or fill up a low spare. Spend your money how you like and on what you like-its your money.

I'm sure you could use it with air tools, it'd be like running off the itty bitty compressors- they'll always be running, and you'll have to wait every time you use the tool for a little while so it 'recharges'.  So, technically, you could do it.  Chances are duty cycle would be exceeded and the compressor won't live as long, but in an 'emergency' once in a while, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I love my CO2 tank from Motion. For the price of $160 I don't think you can pass it up.

Why do I like CO2 better than an "onboard system"? Portability is the main reason. We have mounts in our Jeeps, but I can have it totaly portable in about 10 seconds. I can take it ANYWHERE, and use it for anything. Ever been wheleing and someone 5 Jeeps in front of you needs air? Have fun trying to run hoses form your Jeep, or even trying to get around everyone else on the trail. Just pop out your CO2 tank and walk up to them. Not to mention it takes less space in your Jeep. Don't have to listen to a crazy loud compressor running all the time etc.

Only downfall is that it's not "endless". With that being said I've never used a full tank out wheeling for a weekend. Actually I've not filled my tank in 6+ months. It's got more than enough for a weekend of wheeling. Cost me $8 to have it filled. Even with filling it 4 times a month I'm way better off than a $400+ onboard system.

Both systems have thier place. I just feel that a C02 tank system has more pro's than con's. It fits my needs better, not to mention that I can sway it from Jeep to Jeep depending on what we're wheeling that weekend. Heck I've even put it in another vehical to use to pump up bike tires when I go Mt. Biking. The portability is just awsome. With a permainte system your stuck, and carrying a ton of hose is not fun.

Just my penny and a half worth...

that does make sense...i was just thinking that rather then having to go out and buy an air compressor for the garage and then something for the jeep. cuz if i could run air tools out of my jeep then i could spare the extra costs. cuz, im thinking of spending more money on tools and things to help build up my garage a little bit. so i gotta think this one out lol

I don't know this for sure, but won't you have to have your XJ on if you want to run OBA?  So if you are working in the garage and want to use your OBA you will have to start the XJ and to prevent death, open the garage door; not a problem if the weather is nice, but other wise could be trouble some.  Not to mention gas.

A friend of mine uses his co2 for everything. He even blows out the gutters on his house with it to remove debris.

If anyone is interested I have about 12 scuba tank holders with quick release arms. These grip your tank and hold it in up to something like 30 g's. But if you pull them gently they come right out. These are made for firetruck seats so firefighters can wear their gear while riding. You can mount these verticle or horizontal. I will take some picts tomorrow. If interested PM me. They will hold a standard diamater tank which is no more than6.5 inches.
