Well today went out to the XJ and she wouldn't start and I believe it's the starter at fault. It has always been a little iffy on starting the first turn of the ignition. So now I am considering having the starter rebuilt but wanted to get some opinions on going that route. Or would it just be easier to buy the new one? Also to mention that it is stuck in the parking spot in front of my house so that is where i will be fixing her. Meanwhile me and the wife will be commuting to work in one car. So getting the XJ is a priority just need to get the starter off and repaired/replaced. Just have to motivate myself to get out and do it. Supposed to rain all this week that might delay me a little bit.
It doesn't take much to remove it, so just take it off real quick and have it tested. I don't know the beneffits of having it rebuilt? Is you thinking that it will last longer then getting a new one that is made in China or something? Is it cheaper maybe? I would say that if you are needing the XJ right away just get a new one if that is what the problem is. I don't know how long it would take to rebuild though...
Sorry that I wasn't more help lol.

Well rebuilding is a whole lot cheaper than a new one but today it came off and was fine battery is getting checked tomorrow. Might upgrade to an optima battery.
Good call. Just had this problem with Nick's XJ and it was the Negative ground wire. I think that they were loose or something, not completely off, but close.

The starters on these are easy to get to and replace... I'd be dutch and hit the pick-a-part (offers a 30 day warranty) and get it tested before installation. If it's defective, return the starter and grab another....
Then again, this takes time, and your XJ seems pretty urgent.
Looking at them from an engineering standpoint, a starter is a very simple device, so they really shouldn't fail much. Most seem to be due to a buildup of crud inside the motor, 'dead spots', a stripped drive gear (sure beats stripped teeth on the flywheel!) or the solenoid dies (on ones with a built in solenoid).
