Have you ever pulled a small trailer with your lifted XJ?

I am looking into getting a "pop up" camper. I just wanted to know if my XJ will have any difficulties(example: D35 blowing up) towing one. I am running 3.55 gears and 33" tires. I know I will have to get the longer ball attachment to level the trailer out some while towing. I would just like to have one of these behind the rig for wheeling outings and just going camping.

We pull a med. sized trailer (I think it's 7x10) behind the XJ all the time. It's an alumn. trailer though so it does not weigh a lot.

It does OK, I wouldn't want to pull it any great amount of distance. I think the ramp on the trailer creates a lot of drag though.

Its funny you brought this up, I just towed my 01 XJ home on a trailer , I was worried that I was towing alot more than I was rated and I checked on the internet about towing max weight for an XJ and found that my 98 is rated for 5000 lbs. , I also pull a 6x10 utility trailer, and I have a pick up bed dump trailer I hauled 1 1/2 ton of 85 mix gravel , now I have 193,xxx miles on it with stock axles, and new u-joints hopefully this helps

Thanks for the info. In my quest to figure out if the XJ would squat real bad or not, I found this...

Well...that is sitting up better than I figured it would. A small 6 person pop up shouldn't be much of an issue. By the way, how old is the pic? The XJ looks alot different now and the Beemer is not all lettered up.

i towed the trailer for our boat home from the lake. didnt even know it was back there lol

i had a 2" drop for the ball, and i wound up the trailer wheel and it wouldnt go high enough to get the trailer on so i had to lift up the trailer to get it on the ball lol

Jason, I would TOTALLY camp in that. If that makes me a redneck then SO BE IT! Ha!

Anything is better than an ice cold, hard ground and a tent covered in frost! I don't care what your camper is pulled behind or in- it is still a camper!

As for balls and level towing, see how high hitch is from ground for trailer to be level.

Then find your hitch level. Get a ball (the ball holder really) that's a drop (or raise if it's a little car that's going to tow something) of the difference in inches.

I only towed with the XJ once, and since I didn't have enough weight up front, it swayed a bit.  It wasn't too bad, but I kept speeds 45-55 all the way from Detroit to Grand Rapids.  Any faster and i'd be uncomfortable, and a snowstorm was starting to boot.

I towed our ski nautique with my XJ all summer long no problemo.  With 31s and 3.55 gears. The only problem i ran into was the back fenders rubbing. Time for a bigger lift haha.

Some maybe ideas for you ....

1/... Change your ball ht on the towbar

2/... Change/mod your drawbar to raise the hitch to the ball height

3/... Have your trailer springs on top of the trailer axle

4/... Fit some airbags or even pump up shockies to the XJ for raising the rear ... air bags are better than stressing the shocky mounts.


Lots of people over here towing all sorts of weights more suited to a heavier vehicle .... horsefloats, cartrailers, 18' + caravans ( trailers/mobilehomes or whatever you blokes call em )

Mainly only towing 7x4 or 8x5 camper trailers on lifted XJs though ... the higher you go the less stable things get.

I tow my 19 foot Sea Ray boat. It tows just fine but the brakes feel a bit light in the front. If you want to slow you gotta think ahead. That is why I am currently looking for a rear disc brake set up. I believe they were stock on XJ's late 90s to 2001. Anyone got this info? I did a brake job on one with rear disc's once but never thought about looking at the year....drat!



 

This will probably be the last stock height picts I take before its lifted. Hopefully soon...lol.

The XJ NEVER received rear disc brakes.

The ZJ (Grand Cherokee) did a for a few years, but the XJ never did. What axle do you have? Using the rear discs off a ZJ is the easiest swap, but it will depend on what axle you currently have and does require a bit of modification.
