ujoint issue... rear driveshaft

oddly I just ate a fortune cookie that says "Don't give up.  The best is yet to come."

Anyway, to the point... I removed the retaining clips on the ujoints, and used a c-clamp to get the removal started... once the 'other end' was flush with the yokecoming off the transfer case, I used an old 1/2" drive extension and a hammer to press the ujoint cap the rest of the way out.

Trouble is, the ujoint isn't coming out.  It moved a little, then no more.  I used a bottlejack and said extension but all that is doing is raising the back of the tcase.confuse (go too far and I fear bending something...)

I am considering using a little heat, but with all that grease in there it seems risky, and almost stupid to follow through with.

Any ideas?

My ideas...
1. keep hammering away... using the usual moderate force.
2. wail away with the hammer and hopefully walk away with my thumb intact
3. apply heat, then revert to idea 1 or 2.

ended up removing driveshaft... used dremel tool to remove the goofy clamp on the dust boot... it was stuck in there really well... had to wail on it a little and it came out.

I'm going to get a new driveshaft though... see pics in my project snowball thread

Why are you trying to replace u-joints with the d-shaft still in the Jeep? Your just asking for problems doing that.

Remove the d-shaft and do them on a bench. All you need to do is remove the 4 bolts holding it onto the yoke and it will slide right out of the output yoke on the TC. Than you can replace your joints in a vice if you have to.

it had funny factory clamps on the dust boot on the slip yoke; I hit 'em with a dremel, and removed the shaft (ujoint came free from the diff... I got new 'caps' from the boneyard as they had some gouging. Looking at old u-joint there water in one of the caps and it was pretty ugly. I'll post pics if I didn't already in my jeep build thread.

Installed boneyard shaft+yoke. Notice some vibes under moderate accel, and 65+ mph. I'm not sure if it's out of balance, or a tire balance issue.

The standard duty u-joints from NAPA are serviceable. Heavier duty ones generally are not serviceable (wasting time during my days working parts counter at Advance auto parts I'd putz around comparing parts)- having no grease passageways make it stronger, but once water gets in the bearings, consider them dead... only a matter of time.

Chevelle, That "clamp" is just a hi tech Zip tie!  hack it and make your repair a ton easier.  A tip- when you do get the old caps out put a sanding drum on your dremel and touch up the yoke so it's nice and shiny, then use some antiseize and the new caps will go in easier. It will also make the next replacement that much eaiser also.

'll have to remember this!  I ended up finding damage on the stock DS, so I found a good DS with good ujoints (nonserviceable thoughno), and put that in.
