New Jeep, new problems...

Not only am I new to the this site, but also new to the Jeep community.  Getting my Chevy stuck all the time while Jeeps walk all around me laughing got real old.  I'm no trained mechanic, but pretty handy with stuff.  I have been meaning to share pics with you guys but havn't found time until my desperation is forcing my hand.  I have several issues with my new love that I'm not sure how to address.

First concern.  I recently replaced my u-joint on the passenger side of my axle which required me to remove my shift motor and pull my axle shaft.  That went perfectly fine until my shift motor dropped causing my three vacuum lines to disconnect.  I don't know which hole each of the three hoses belong in and have tried multiple combinations with poor results.  There are one each green, yellow and white hoses. Three female openings, one on the side of the cylinder and two protruding out with one about a half inch proud of the other.  My 4x4 seems to engage and disengage but now my light does not light up on my dash.  To top it off I don't even know what side of the truck the vacuum cylinder faces.

Secondly, probobly not related, but now when I have my clutch engaged I hear funny sounds like some debris floating around in my tranny.  Even if I crawl under there while the motor is off but still hot I can hear fluid moving around.  This one really has me baffled.

Third, I can probobly solve on my own but was curious if you guys have had the same problems.  My sway bar bracket on my axle keeps breaking.  I've welded it twice already and I think I'll have to fab a new bracket with a ton more contact.

Tried to keep it short and friendly, any advice is much appreciated.  Thanks.

First of welcome to :glxl:

That is a very clean looking MJ! biggrin

1) Ditch the vacuum stuff and just get rid of it all. It is likely to fail even if you get it hooked back up correctly. Here is a link to a 10 min mod that cost nothing to fix it and permanently engage it. http://greatlakesxj.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=43793&p=3&topicID=29352993

2) Your breaking your link because of a few problems.
  • Your swaybar end links (the peice that attaches to the swaybar to the axle) is to short. You need to get longer links. I can't see in your pic, but it looks like this may be the issue.
  • Your hitting your link on that side with your tierod at suspension flex, thus forcing it to break. So basicly you have a clearance issue and need to move your mount further up. A good solution to this is to purchase these (CLICK HERE).

Thanks guys.  Yeah it has been repainted, it was teal originally.  It looks clean in the photo but there's a few dings and peeled paint, not to mention trail scratches.  It's nice enough to show off, but rough enough to take out wheeling.  Bumpers will come soon with possibly some rock sliders.  If my money wasn't so tight I'd be in the middle of an axle swap.  These stock gears and 35"s are killing me.  I'll keep you posted with the build progress.

My clutch sound is leading me to believe it's my throw bearing, I'm just going to bring it to my friends shop.  I don't have time to play guessing games with my tranny.

Lead- I just read your thread about your buddy's rollover.  It's got me nervous.  I hope that broken part was a fluke 'cause I'm running Rusty's parts on my rig.  It didn't come with tie rod ends though, it came with pretty beefy hiem joints.

There's a lot of Comanche guys here too... basically XJ pickup I'm sure you know.

I agree with most of the others, the vaccum axle is not really reliable, I'd do the 10-min mod mentioned above. I never did it (I have a 96, after they got rid of the vac ax).

Lead knows his stuff. I think he's the resident Jeep Farmer. He and his wife has a XJ, MJ, another XJ, and a YJ. I think... last I knew...  here's the build thread on one of his MJs..

and a XJ.  I think it's really cool.  My XJ will end up looking pretty similar to the first pic he has there... lol...
