Removing front coils... not happening... :(

Today I spent all afternoon on the Jeep... no progress besides removing a wheel and getting some exercise in with the coil spring compressor.cry

So... the swaybar is stuck on the link, I can't get that off for the life of me now for some reason, and I do believe I had to remove it to remove the coils before stuffing the spacers in.

Also, for some reason the strut compressors (the 2 part tool with a big screw on each that takes a while with hand tools) now like to slide 'down' the coil.  At least the one.

What do I do?  GRRRRRRR!!!!!  (good) pizza and beverage of your choice (two bottles max, I don't need drunk people around here) offered to those who help.
-Matt

edit: as it sits...

I'll probably put the wheel on it tonight and roll it back so my brother can get his car out of the garage (parents moved in with Grandma so it's pretty cool... I might be able to have a 'Jeep party' lol...

wow-that is looking dangerous!! When I done my lift, we basically done a axle R&R. I never had to use a spring compressor, just dropped the whole axle assembly. When you do this, make sure your brother's car doesn't need in the garage because its a whole afternoon job. you'll need to get the swaybar link knocked out of the way, have a set of jack stands under "frame" of the jeep set kinda high, keep some pressure with ur floor jack under axle, remove control arms and the other goodies that need to be removed and slowly let jack down-watch your brake lines and such, with control arms and such out of way(you r replacing them anyway) the axle will come down enough to just pull springs out w/ no dangerous compressors like that, that is one tool that needs to be outlawed!! I am am telling you now when you go to put axle back in place with the new springs, make sure u have either a good come-a-long/straps of some sort or good strong friends. It took about everything my uncle and I had to hold the axle in place to line up control arm mounts and we are not small guys, LOL! Man I wish you lived closer, I just cannot get away right now especially with my daughters starting school and all. good luck! I have a hard time typing this all down-its always easier for me just be there and show ya but... anyway I am sure the others will chime in and probably better describe the process needed for ya or even a better-easier way than I mentioned. Just do me a favor and be careful with that compressor-I had a good friend die by one of thoseevileye

too bad the control arm bolts are as stuck as the leaf spring bolts... f- michigan rust!!! RRRRRR!!!!! furious

In a more sensible mood now, tomorrow I'm to find a better spring compressor like the one shown in the pic (looks like theres no way for the 'fingers' to slide together like the two individual units on the one I 'rented'.  This will make for a less nerve wracking install, and as to remove the swaybar link... hmmm...  I thought of disconnecting the lower bolt, but for my socket (I'm missing my crescent wrench) to fit there I'll have to pull the skidplate, and the front nuts (just behind the bumper) spin the bolts, so with a non-removable skidplate, I'm not sure how to go about it.  I was tempted to just hacksaw them off and get Q-Ds for it.

I dunno....no I'd hate to take it to a shop for everything, as it costs $$$ and I like to wrench on stuff.  Just the leafs and LCAs (both due to frozen stuck bolts- PB and heat didn't help) was all I was planning on.

Pass. side done... moving to drivers side tonight after work. :)

I ended up cutting the swaybar link. Then the 'nub' came out real easy with some heat and a few whacks of the hammer. I'll have to remove the skidplate later to get at the lower part of the swaybar link, but that's for another time. Of course, if you know an easy way to access the top of the bolts along the front of the skidplate, let me know!!!

Your gonna end up with a really bad headache using spring compressors. If this is the first time you have taken your suspension apart, three things will help. BIG hammer, 2' breaker bar ( I use half of my jack handle), and heat( MAP gas works great). Oh ya almost forgot your end links are going be stuck real bad. Just cut them and upgrade. Better yet cut it all off and save yourself some time.LOL Celebrate each night with a cold one. After your done wrenching of corse.

It's finally done. Drivers side not as scary as pass side looked at times, but thank God I didn't get hurt! I was thinking about that all the freekin time, and probably gave me my first gray hair at the age of 23... :/

Sorry I didn't get on here to help post.  I have used the compressors before and agree that you shouldn't unless you have too.  Glad to see that everything back together and good to go now.  SOOOO where are the pics?

pics coming tonight in the project snowball thread. I'm taking it to a shop today to get the leafs and LCAs put on, hitch put on (stupid weldnut strips are shot and bumper looks like a B* to get off with the rust and lack of good access.

$400 (price not guranteed) for rear leafs and hitch install.

Now about those upper shock bolts. I want to remove the weldnuts and fishwire a bolt through and secure the shock with nuts. Can I drill the remains of the old bolt out and fishwire the new bolt through the old weldnut?
-Matt

Reply in the project snowball thread, as the front coils are finished!
