So a buddy of mine finally retired has old ZJ because (after many years on smashing the frame rail with rocks, trees, logs other non Jeeps ect)the doors simply would not open or close right. We already straighted it once at a frame shop and rewelded most the the (frame)panels back together again. The seond time, however the metal started ripping away at the welds and he just decided to move on to another ZJ and start over. Since I plan on wheeling hard on rocks ect I decided to install frame sliders. I made these out of scrap 3/8 mild steel I got from the scrap bin at work. The hardest part was cleaning up all the undercoat from May when I installed my rock sliders. I painted and undercoated the heck out of it to so hopefully I won't have any rust issues. Then again I think it would take years to rust thru 3/8 plate. Here are some pictures.
Looks functional enough. Nice work. Did you finish the welds all the way accros the top or just seam sealed it?
NAH. Just did several 1 inch long tack welds. That way water can get out if it gets in. No matter how well you think you have welded something water always seems to find its way in. This way I can also pressure wash out the dirt ect from the back as its only tacked in two places there and the rest is open.
The edge was already rolled on it when I got the metal from the scrap pile. My company has a hyd roll press that can bend up to 1/2 inch as long as its hot enough. When I saw these I was like "score!!!" and grabbed them up. I still have a 4 foot chunk left if you want it for something. I know there was also more pieces like it. Apparently someone bent 4 five foot long pieces it too short so they were scrapped. That rolled edge will be very handy as now I have a better chance of just sliding off a rock and not getting hung up on it.
