Inexpensive rear recovery solution....

My friend Nate was tired of not having a rear recovery point. I pulled these hooks off from the front of a S-10 Blazer/S-15 Jimmy at the local yank and grab for like $5 for the pair. Here is what they look like.  They are 7/8" thick!

The holes almost line up perfectly in the "frame" rail to be a direct bolt on, but not quite. So he opened her up just a touch.  Minimal filing required.

Then he slipped/forced the back plate into the rail...it's a bit of a tight fit.

Got the holes all lined up and started threading the bolts.

Here is what it looked like all bolted up...

Finally, here is a shot from the back.

As you can see, these things tuck up in there nice and tight. We were pretty impressed with the outcome, especially for the price. He just ordered some shackle relocation brackets from H.D. Offroad, so they will probably be a quarter inch lower here shortly. It sure beats paying $160 for a hitch!

for all of the responses i've had on jeepforum, i'd figure i'd come on here and address the questions as well.

1) yes, we know the frame rail is rusty. he has frame rail repair and shackle relocation brackets in the works. he just wanted to see if they would fit.

2) yes, they only have 2 bolts in them. 2 large bolts that go through the frame rail and bolt to a 3/8" thick plate that sandwiches the rail. plenty strong after the frame is repaired and the relocation brackets go on.

I was going to say something to that affect...

So what is it going to have on it when it is all said and done?  I know that my front tow hooks have brackets with them and I have STILL bent them some pulling other people out.  So I would hate to see what would happen without having brackets.

the frame rails will be repaired and also beefed up with the HD Offroad shackle relocation brackets. i think he's still going to try to find a hitch for it, but they cost a lot more than these things did.
