Facktory Fog Lights not working

So the fog lights on the XJ stopped working the other day....  I checked all the fuses and we are good there.  They both stopped at the same time.  I don't think that it is the lights themselves because when you flip the switch in the XJ it usually has a green light on the switch that turns on.  That doesn't come on anymore either.  So that leads me to believe that it is the power going to the lights or something.  Just wondering if anyone else has had a simular issue and had a simple fix before I start ripping the dash apart chasing wires.

Also on a side note, my airbag light is on.  I thought that they might be related.  But checked the fuses for that as well and they are good too.  The airbag light has been on for about 2-3 weeks.  I don't remember the last time that I used the fog lights though so they could have both happened at the same time, I don't know.

Thanks

Andy

Well I think that my swich is going out.  If i push the fog lights on, they don't turn on, but if I pull the button up a fraction from the on position they turn on... So not fixed, but works fine for me. biggrin

When I bought my '98 XJ, my fog lights did not work. I did not bother looking into the problem since I had never experienced the advantage that fog lights give you (Never had fog lights before). I also just thought the bulbs were burnt out. Well, a couple years later I removed the switch from the dash and proceded to take it apart. It turned out that my switch was fried inside. Literally melted like hot cheese. I didn't have money for another one, so I just left the dash the way it was, with an empty slot for the switch. Just recently(a couple days ago) I looked at the wiring diagram for my jeep and noticed that all the current that runs to the fog lights goes through the switch. I don't like that at all. I would rather have a light-duty switch that controls a relay, so that I don't have all that amperage going through the switch or the wire harness for that matter. If I remember correctly, I called a Jeep dealership and asked about my problem. They said I need a new wire harness. I was told it would be about $110. I'm not about to spend that much just so I can tear apart my dash and install a frustrating harness. Soon I am going to find a suitable replacement switch instead of buying a $45 stock replacement.

So, remove your switch and check that it is in good condition. I actually took mine completely apart; removed the outer housing so I could see the innards. There was little indication(visual) of failure from the outside.

As far as your airbag light, I had a similar problem. My airbag light along with a couple other lights were going on and staying on. Then my guages would stop working all of a sudden. When I hit the bottom of the dash, they would spring back to life(for a short while). I removed my bezel, removed the instrument cluster, and visually inspected it. All seemed well, so I reinstalled it. From taking it apart I realized that the cluster has a male "socket" that plugs into a female receiver on the dash. My problem ended up being a poorly connected cluster. When I reinstalled it, I made sure it was fully and correctly seated. That solved the problem, and it hasn't been back for more than 12 months.

Good luck smile. I may repost with photos of my switch, if I can find it.

-Patrick

1st off Welcome to glxj  Glad to see you on here.

Thanks for the info.  I just took the dash apart yesterday and did as you did. It looks as though my switch was not pluged in all the way. After playing with it for a little bit I was able to get it to turn on everytime.  So I am going to pack it with dialectic (sp?) grease and re-instal.  I just ran out yesterday when playing with my windshield washer pump....

Your fog light switch, I don't know what year your XJ is but this is were I get most of my Factory Replacement parts:  JeepsAreUs

Here is the fog light that you are looking for I think. Link
