Looking for Help....

Just bought an 87 MJ. It is powered by a 4.0 with a 5 spd manual. It is 2WD. I'd like to start gathering parts to convert it to 4WD.

When it comes to a tranfer case, confusewould I need to change that as well?

Depending on what tranny it has you'll most likely need to swap to a 4wd tranny as well as get a TC.

It's not a extremely difficult swap, but some wiring may be involved as well depending on what tranny you end up going with.

Ok, got it figured out, it needs a fuel pump. Most times to change a fuel pump, You could either drop the tank or raise the bed. Look like i can change the punp with out doing either :) That would be great if that's the case, Can anyone verify that for me?
If the bed does have to come off, then i'm going do a spring over on it and lift the rear while the bed is off.

Thanks guys for all the advice in the past.. its great that we can al help each other out like this.

I have not done one on an MJ.  But on an XJ you have to remove the tank to get the pump out.  It is not hard.  Just 2 straps hold it up and then you have to disconnect the fuel lines.  I think that there are 2 lines that are clamped on.  I will see if I can find a write up.

Here is a write up that was done on this site.  This was done on an XJ.  He cuts the 2 straps holding the tank on.  We didn't we took our time and got them off, just use some PB blaster a couple days in advance and you should be able to get them off.  Here is he LINK

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL SWAPPING THE PUMP!!!!

The sending units are no longer made (or available) for the MJ's. So be very very careful not to break/bend/damage it.

The MJ's got a few different style pumps. My recommendation is to pull the pump BEFORE you go to a parts store.

You can do it without removing anything; however due to the rarity of the sending units I've always preferred to undo the straps to give myself a bit more room.
