01 xj ticking

My 01 xj 4.0 auto with 60,000 miles on it has a ticking noise.
Runs as expected for the mileage
When I am wheeling it is the only time I have the problem
Only does this after I have been on steep inclines or off camber situations
Does not tick until I shut it off and then start it back up after it sets for at least a couple minutes.
Does not use or leak a drop of oil
Any Ideas, what to check, etc. need to get to the bottom of this.

60k is still a baby. Most all of them have some valve train noise. Mine started ticking  louder after I hydro locked it at 80k. Currently still ticking at 145k. Whats your pressure at, also what oil filter are you using? I recomend using a Mobil1 filter and nothing less. Also may want to start using synthetic fluids. The 4.0 will bang and puff alog for years to come.

I take it that when it is ticking it is coming from the engine?

Does it sound like this?  This would be a lifter tick.

yes I agree 60k is just getting broke in, that is why Im concerned. This is not valve train noise it is a major tick, but only after off camber or incline wheeling. I have been using synthetic for 5000k miles now. I used it immediately after I purchased this jeep. I use the fram toughguard. As far as pressure thats part of my concern it will be low around 10 lbs. until it sets and idols for 30 seconds to a minute then the pressure jumps to normal and the ticking quits.

yes from my experience I would say lifter tick but not exactly like the video. Also It runs rough when it does this ticking. If I hit the accelerator a little it acts as if  it is not hitting on all cylinders also.

I do not drive this vehicle everyday so I have only had this happen a couple times over the past few months. Im thinking a tuneup would not be out of line and then I could see if it persists. I just dont understand the low oil pressure and ticking portion of this. Do you think it is getting some kind of debris in the lifter.

Oil pressure is not too low, Mine idles at 40 45. The Fram oil filter sucks. Next oil change use a Mobile1 filter you should see an increase in pressure and MPGs. You may also be hearing spark knock. Do the full over engine tune up. Ignition, fluids and fuel. Being a coil pack type ignition, I'm not sure how this would create spark knock. I thought the computer would take care of it , but I have no experiance with packs.

I'm almost positive it's the FRAM filter. Swap it out with another brand during your next oil change and it'll probably go away.

mine has some hardcore lifter tick for a few mins till she warms up, then it goes away... it also idles high for some reason, but it really doesnt bother me much.. i would say if it's definitely not piston/rod/valve knock, i wouldnt worry excessively about it although it is nice to have a quietly running engine.. also, on some vehicles the injectors make a sometimes very noticeable ticking if that's possible on yours? i know my buicks injectors tick pretty audibly.

x2 on the Filter.  I don't know that it is the problem but it will definetly help.  FRAM are crap.

Why do you need the grippy tape?  Why not just use an oil filter wrench?

10lbs of oil pressure is LOW even at idle IMO.  Question is why does it fall to 10lbs for 30 seconds and then jump back up?  I've ran Fram filters a couple of times, mostly use Wix.  I never noticed a difference in oil pressure with either filter.  But I agree with Lead.... LOSE the Fram filter.

I would be looking into whether the oil pick up screen is partially plugged, and not picking up oil when the Jeep is off camber.  Again IMO, something is starving the lifters for oil momentaraly.  And since the mains are usually fed oil first, THAT is a MAJOR concern!  BTW, have you ever heard a knocking when the oil pressure is low?

I know all engines are different but, my 4.0 with 125,000 miles on it will idle when fully warmed up at around 20-25lbs of oil pressure.  At anything over idle it climbs to 50-55lbs and stays there.

The oil pressure gauge on the XJ's is notorious for reading incorrectly. If it's jumping around quite a bit I'd check your oil pressure sensor for a loose/faulty connection. It could also be the sensor itself.
