Hello, new to the forum. I have a 00 Cherokee Classic and was wondering if theres something I can do to loosen up my steering. 1st, there is no power assist when coming out of a turn. Is this normal with Jeeps? 2nd, can I install a Grand Cherokee power steering pump to have better power steering? My power steering pump is not bad I dont think. I just want easier or looser steering.
Usually it is the other way around. I don't think that you can put a grand cherokee pump on, or at least I have not heard of it. So you don't have power steering some times? But it works other times? Have you checked the fluid level in the pump?

I'd say install a lift kit, after I lifted mine, my steering is scary loose!

Sounds to me like your pump is not doing it's job correctly. I'd check fluid levels first. A faulty pump will not do it's "job" and make the steering a bit (or a lot) more difficult.
Their are a few options for "other" pumps out there; both aftermarket as well as using them from another vehicle. They won't necessarily make your steering easier persay; however it will change the ratio a bit for a faster response.
If you buy a new pump, get one with a Lifetime warranty. I would suggest Napa. They will even pull your pulley off and put it on the new one.
Since I have replaced my power steering pump abou 2.5 yrs ago I have had to replace it 2 more times (yes 3 pumps). They keep leaking after about 6-10 months. I can now change a pump in less than 1 hr. And that includes the trip to the store to have them pull the pulley. So moral of the story get a LIFETIME warranty. I didn't get one the first time but did on the second one, so the last one was free, and if I need another one it will be as well.

thanks for the info and welcome fellows. my power steering isnt going bad but i ran into a jeep guy and he said the gear box may need a 1/4 turn to loosen it. he said that would effect my no return to center around turns too. does this sound right or does he not know what hes talking about.

Could be your problem. I adjusted the steeringbox on my Jeep trying to figure out where my wandering problem was coming from. I did get it set too tight and the Jeep would not return to center without me turning the wheel.
You will need to remove the electric fan to get to the nut on top of the box. Not sure if I remember the correct size wrench.... might be a 5/8" or 15mm. Loosen the nut, and there is a stud that has a hex hole in it. Again I don't remember the correct size allen wrench. Turn the stud in to tighten the box up. Make VERY small adjustments as a little makes ALOT of difference.
Worth trying.
FWIW, bad caster angles can slow up your steering too.
