Con Ferr

Adam

What size is your roof rack? Is it steel? Does it have a floor? How much did it cost you?

I am trying to decide on a rack. I really like the Olympic Top Hat because it is full length. They don't have the best rep for quality though.

I am not planning on putting a spare up there or anything really heavy. To be honest I just like the way they look.

I also want to mount some lights on it.

What do you think of your Con Ferr?

I'm pritty happy with my rack.

I did a lot of re-search on racks prior to be getting one. I wasn't happy with the Surco's, as they in my opinion are not built very well. Ok for looks, and if your going to just cary a light amount of stuff, but I knew I wouldn't. I had a Con-Fer on my Tacomo a few years back and was really happy with it, so decided that was what I wanted.

Mine is a 48x60 (I think, I'll go measure if for you). It's the 6" tall one, as they do sell them in 2 different heights. It has 3 cross bars on the bottom, so no "real" floor. The bars are flat faced, with holes, so you could easily add one. I do belive that Con-Fer does sell a floor for them.

I also know Con-Fer sells a 1 peice unit, and a 2 peice unit that bolts together. I have the 1 peice, and to be honest I've never seen a 2 peice in person, so I can't really comment on them.

I looked a lot online for best prices, but they were definatly a bit more than any other ones I had looked at (ie. other brands). I than began to look on eBay, and about a month of looking on a daily basis I scored on in CA. I picked it up for like $50 plus shipping. Unfortantly the guy didn't package it real well and it arrived damaged. So I had to do a bit of fab work on it after getting it, oh well I couldn't complain for the price. I welded several light tabs on it so I could put lights on. I know Con-Fer sells a bolt on attachment, but they were a bit more than I ever wanted to pay. So I had a $2 peice of steal, cut it in lengths I wanted and tacked them on. I than sandblasted it and painted it.

All in all, I'm pritty happy with it. I'd definatly buy a new one for another rig, and recomend it to anyone. I do Search and Rescue, so I've always got a lot of weight up on it. We went down to Mississippi for 4 weeks 2 days after Katrina hit, and I know I had a good 500+ lbs up on it and it did fine. I carry my spare up there, along with a shovel/ax/Hi-Lift and havn't had a problem yet.

I really don't have a great shot of mine, so I've attached a pic of Dan's. Identical, he just has his lights a bit different.

I know the Surco is Cheaper but i have had mine for almost a year now no issues , can't beat it for the price all depends what you want it for. Mounting lights and carring small things Surco is fine have my lights ,hi-lift and soon spare on it.
