safari rack requirements??

I have decided I am going to fab up a custom steel safari rack. I am looking for opinions.

What length and width would you go?

How tall would you make the sides?

What are some features it must have?

Gutter or factory rail mount?

What type of finish would you put on it?

I am just fishing here. Let me know how YOU would build it.

48x60x6 made out of steel. Mounts to the rain gutter rails.

4 light tabs on the front, 2 on the rear. Mounts on each side for a hi-lift and shovel/ax. Floor on it and also mounts for your spare tire.

I would use plasti-coat bedliner matrial (like the rubicon finish).

Just my penny and a half worth.

I agree with most of that. I think I am going to make it 45 x 65 x5 though. I like the looks of a full length rack. I don't want to go to wide so the high lift, etc. don't stick out past the Jeep.

I am thinking 16 guage steel.

Would you go square or round tubing?

Does anyone have pics of what the different mounts look like?

i like square tubing myself ,but it depends on more i guess what would be easier to work with for you. As far as the mounts depends if want to mount them  to the rack, or use like Yakima bars or Proline Bars.

I am going with gutter mounts.

I was thinking high-lift mounts, spare mount, shovel mount. I don't know what they look like.

Gutter mounts are good, but you going to fasten directly to yhe rack or built the rack and get Gutter mount Yakima or other bars and mount the basket to that. Hi-lift ,axe and shovel mounts ,on Adams suggestion i used u-bolts worked great. You know where i work if ya like stop and take a look. Im probably going to get a http://www.jackguard.com/ and mount it to my rack for the Hi-lift.

I am sure Ubolts are fine. I would rather weld something on since I am fabbing it from scratch.

I am going to get gutter mounts that will bolt or weld to cross bars that I will be making from steel.

I'm not a fan of http://www.naxja.org/forum/newfrontpage.php  but there are some good threads about fabrication of racks and mounts. Hi-lift makes there own mounts for jacks since your fabbing your rack maybe get theres and plan your fabrication around them.

hi-lift mounts

Surco mounts for tire and axe and shovel

I am almost finished with my custom rack. Its 48" x 60" x 6"  I used 1" x 1" steel and have the 4 tabs up front and on out back.  Also i made a spare tire mount with a custom big ass wing nut.  When i get the high lift it will go up there too.  Where can I get gutter mounts that arent to expensive?

What guage was the steel that you used? I was thinking 16 for mine.

Well, I ordered my steel this morning and I will be picking it up tonight (Thursday). I am planning on doing the radius work on the corners tomorrow. Saturday will be a big fabrication day. I will keep you all posted as I am sure you are very interested.

Post up those pics. I would love to see them. Although I probably won't put a spare carrier up there right away. Mine fits inside just fine.

I got 3/4" 16 gauge steel. Judging by its appearance, it will be PLENTY strong. I am going with three cross bars also. That will help with strength.

You can get gutter mounts from Thule. They aren't cheap. Surco makes some that are cheaper. I have found a few more out there. I haven't gotten any yet.
