A true sport utility vehicle...

My goal for my Jeep is to turn it into a true sport utility vehicle. I don't plan on running it at Moab or anything like that. It's not going to see any rocks. It will see some light offroad duty.

I love the outdoors. I like to camp, mountain bike, hike etc. Some of these trips require travel. Therefore, the Jeep needs to have good road manners. It has to be able to get me to where I am going both on and off the pavenment.

What are some special features that you would want in a vehicle like this?

What are your thoughts on lift, storage, recovery, lighting, accessories?

Jeff

I like you idea of having a 12v source (cig lighter) in the back for various needs. It would be nice to be able to plug accessories in back there like a cooler, radio, light, cell, etc. I have a 110 inverter that I might mount back there.

I'm gonna have to add a HO alternator to your list...

true HO alternater would be a good possibility, I have entertained the idea of a Inverter as well, just a small one. I thought of adding a second battery as well.

I have a 700 watt invertor, and it's mounted under the hood. I also have a 300 watt one mounted in the rear (under seat). I use them quite a bit actually. But my XJ is a mobile command vehical....

Are you running your stock alternator, Adam?

If you are, I definitely won't have a problem. Your Jeep is some kind of sub-station.

Well kinda. It's not a Mean Green or anything like that. I had it rebuilt, and it puts out a little bit more than stock does, but not much more.

I've never really had a problem with it keeping up. And I am usually running several things at once (CB, GPS, SAR Radio, Stereo w/Amp, Laptop, Foglights, and several other things). Also it really depends on how good your battery is aswell. I usually don't just let the power invertor run when the XJ is not running. That only happens when I have the TV and DVD player plugged into it for squirt on a longer trip or if we are camping etc. It've let is run for a good 2-3 hours before running the TV/DVD without it running and have had no real issues. My larger one has dual fans on it, so it's kinda funny to hear my XJ hum like a PC sitting in the middle of the woods.

Factor in what you think you'd run MAX on it, than add an extra 100watts to be on the safe side. If you plan on running several things while camping or whatnot I'd look into doing a dual bat. conversion aswell.

The factory alternator is somewhere in the 120 amp range as long as its in good working order.

Will probably do the dual battery set eventually ,myself.

Since you said biking and maybe some hunting. I would say the front and rear hitches would help with bike storage and then dead deer can go on a fold out rack.  With the hitches you can run all types of goodies.  Get a pole holder or make one for the front hitch with a cooler liek in Quadratec. You might wanna make some drawers in the back for storage.  i was thinkin the same just an all-raound awesome vehicle.
