GPS units

Been looking into the possibility of buying a GPS unit of some type. Need some info on brands and types to look at. I would like to use it to for my deer hunting and 4 wheeling trips so I'm thinking something a bit portable but still use it in my Jeep. Also been reading alot about geocaching http://www.geocaching.com/ sounds like a good thing to combine with my Jeep interest. Any suggestions on brands ,feature and types of units.Need to be a bit budget minded as well. Thanks

adam is the guy to talk about that. we use his gps that's mounted in his jeep a lot, especially a lot for Geocaching actually. and yes, caching is a lot of fun, it's a great hobby to pick up.

Actually Jeff, you already have one. "Big brother" already has a unit inside of you somewhere. You just have to find it before they find you.

Probably true, Jeff. But not before some intense "probing"

Well first off you need to determine what you need the GPS for. Is it just something to have or are you actually going to be using it often? After you determine what your going to be using it for, you need to decide what features you want. Are you wanting something that helps give directions on the road, are you wanting something that only gives cordinates, are you wanting a color scree, etc.

If your doing any geocaching your going to want something that you can take mobile with you. I can get pritty close with my unit in the XJ, but sometimes it is a must to have a handheld when we are hunting a cache. If your only going to be using it on the road than your going to want something with a larger screen that you can mount so it's easy to see while driving.

eBay is a good place to pick up used units. A lot of people get them and never use them, so they sell them. And than others have an entry leval one and want to upgrade so they sell thier old one to cover some of the cost.

I really like the Garmin E-trex Legend for a unit of both worlds. I've used one a few times caching, and they are pritty accurate, and have several extra features that others on the market do not.

I will defently use it ,would be helpfull in tracking deer in the field as well just explring the outdoors. The geocaching has an appeal i think would  be great to do with the family.

Looking at handheld units that i can get a mount to put it in my Jeep. Wondering how important an external antenae port is on the unit? Also is a mapping unit better?

Looking at Garmin and Magellen.

It's kinda like computers, Jeff. You have to pay more for more features. You just have to sift through and decide what features are right for you. A lot of times the extra features and tons of memory are a waste of money.

I would want one with mapping and external antenna options. Lots of memory would be nice, but it might not be necessary for you. Same thing for color screens. They are nice, but not really necessary. They also eat battery life.

WAAS enabled will get you within less than 10 feet. Non-WAAS units are more typically less than 50 feet. There are other variables, of course.

It's a tough call. The way I see it,the ones that cost $100 or less might not be a bad idea. If you really get into it, you can always sell it and upgrade.

This one looks like it's up your alley.

I like this one. Not exactly budget though.

Out of those 3 I'd recomend the Garmin. I don't like Magellan, but thats just a personal preference thing.

I agree with Adam. I would go with the Garmin. The etrex is a good "bang for your buck".

Do they make it in yellow?

I have a cobra gps 1000 that's a couple years old, it's not a color screen, but has a 'blue timex style' backlight and I've used it for hiking and trails and stuff. Good for the occasional user, and affordable too! It uses SD cards for memory, and AAs for power. Displays current speed, heading (analog and digital compass) average speed, and lots of good info like that. Also displays satellite signal, and you can save where you've been to retrace your journey later, or find your way back.

My only gripe is my present inability to download road maps onto it. But that's okay, I can read a roadmap.
