Recycled Rear Bumper Build

OK, since this is my first bumper build, I'll throw up some pics.  Nothing too special here, but what the hell.

My goal is to build a new rear bumper cheaply, as tight to the body as possible and with a built in receiver for recovery.

so, to keep it cheap, I started by cutting up my old rock rails, which are 2x4x3/16"

one full rail is gonna be the main bumper section

the other rail was cut up to be used under my cut quarters

picked up the receiver tube

measured up and marked for the receiver

drilled holes at all four corners all the way thru, so both sides lined up

cut out

after some time with the die grinder

nice tight fit all around

opened up the rear crossmember for the mounts

Looks good, man. Nice use of extra parts you had laying around. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Looking good. You going to put shackle tabs on it? If I had some old rockers laying around, well they wouldnt be layin around I need some rockers.  What is your front bumper?

well, i did get some shackle tabs, but am probably not going to use them for now.  I'll just have the rear receiver for recovery (that's all I've been using for the last few years anyways).

front bumper i currently have is by Custom4x4Fabrication, however, the approach angle sucks badly, and I really messed it up last weekend at the Cliffs (picture below).  Once I finish this rear bumper and a few other projects, I will be building a new one for the front as well.

making good progress now

brackets complete

measuring for the brackets

drilled holes again to make the cuts

cut

...and i didn;t even screw up......nice fit around the brackets

so, that's where i stopped for tonight. i want it to sit closer to the body, so I need to remove some more of the receiver, because it is up against the rear crossmember.....i can take off at least another 1/2-3/4"

Nice work Randy. I like the use of the angle instead of using the stock mounts.

yeah, it mounts like a hitch would, except it slides into the framerail :)  I am going to try to tie in at least 2 of the normal bumper mounting bolts on each side, just so I have mounting points in more than one plane......but if I can't make that work, I am confident it is more than strong enough as it is

tacked in place

pretty good fit

the overall look so far

top welded and blended

cut out the way i wanted it. now i just need to cap that off and the little front piece too
