has anyone had this problem or heard of it?i rebuilt a few 4.os and 4.2s and i have never seen this or heard of it even the guys at work have never seen it ,i went to put the 87 on the lift ,fired it up for maybe 2 seconds and i heard a pop and new somthing was wrong, shut it down looked under the hood and there was five qaurts of oil on the ground ,looked like i threw a rod ,but didnt ,blew the oil filter apart not once not twice,3 rd time i put on a fram and it didnt blow the case but it blew the seal out ,so some how the oil pump is putting out about 200 psi maybe more ,we think its a check valve that blew ,so when i drop this pan to replace the pump ,i know im not gonna like what i see and want to rebuild it,any one have any ideas?
Does it only do it at higher RPM's or does it do it at idle as well? What viscosity oil are you running? Have you actually measured the oil pressure to see what it's at before it blows the filter, or is the 200psi a guess?
You definatly have oil pressure build up which is indicative of a blockage somewhere on the high pressure side of system.
Some probable causes for high oil pressure are:
* Partially spun bearing. * Blocked or partially blocked oil passages * Using an oil with too high of a viscosity.
You might want to remove the valve cover, and see how she's oiling up top. With high pressure it should be getting plenty of oil to the rocker arms. If not, check the tubing running up the back driver's side of the engine to the head for kinks or mashed spots, or take it off and blow through it. If this tube is restricted it will increase oil pressure, not to mention what lack of oil does to the valve train....
