Front end noise figured out... finally

I've had a knocking noise in the front end for awhile now. Not all the time, just ever so often. Lately it has become more frequent. I have checked the steering parts a million times, and was never able to locate where it was coming from... until today.

It is coming from the front shocks. If I bang my hand on the shock body, I hear the noise I've been experiencing. Apparently it is the shock piston rod knocking against the seal/bushing. The shocks don't leak, and work fine.  So I guess since they work fine, I'll just learn to live with the noise

Anyone else had this problem? If you're having a knocking noise you might want to check your front shocks.

do you get it when accelerating and/or braking??? our '94 dakota has had this knocking noise uner the front end for like ever.. and we havent been able to figure out what it is.. it usually knocks more when accelerating and braking, but also once and a while over bumps...

Speed dosen't play any part in the noise.  The knocking noise comes when I hit stutter bumps, expansion joints, any sharp edged bump.  It has driven me crazy trying to figure it out until now.

As far as the Dakota, have you checked the ball joints?  Dakotas, and Dodge in general are notorious for crappy ball joints.  I traded a '96 Dakota for the Jeep I have now, and I knew the ball joints in it were getting close to needing to be replaced.

yeah... the ball joints have been replaced.. ever since the front passenger side wheel popped off last summer at an intersection lol

but yeah it's not speed or anything that makes it clunk.. if you hit the gas pedal, as the engines torque is applied, the front end clunks... also the same for braking.. basically when the front end moves it clunks...
